LINDA ELLIS THE DASH POEM COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT - OPEN LETTER

I’ve been accused of copyright infringement. How did I get myself into this mess? In 2011, one of my clients sent me an email that included a poem called “The Dash" by the Christian author, Linda Ellis. This viral poem is about what we choose to do with the time between the year we were born and the year of our death, hence the title. The poem is commonly read at funerals, as part of sermons and found on thousands of inspirational blogs without authorization.  Like myself, the unsuspecting people behind the viral sharing of The Dash poem, are all potential victims and a lifelong income source for Ms. Ellis.
The email began something like this: “share with 10 of your girlfriends and bless them today”.  I don’t mind getting Good Luck or God Bless emails but I never pass them along.  That day, I chose to post The Dash poem on my non-profit blog with author credit and this link www.liveyourdash.com.  Unfortunately my posting showed up on a search alert established by Linda Ellis.  In a series of intimidating email letters sent via email by her copyright representative and attorney she demands up to $150,000 to settle from anyone who posts without permission. The payout includes a gag order.
Unfortunately by client’s sweet gesture filled with good intentions harmed me in ways that have yet to be fully flushed out.  My posting of The Dash poem likely inspired others to share it, and I’m truly sorry I am party to the distribution of this intellectual property. This viral poem is more damaging than any computer virus I've ever experienced. Lives, organizations and important programs are affected and infected long term and permanently. I am sharing my story with you with the hope that you and members of your non-profit organization will be spared this grief.
In preparing my case, and in support of other victims, I have created a page on my website /copyright-infringement-the-das/.  This page allows other victims to comment and post their own story. I encourage you to join in on the discussion. I do understand that you may already be a victim and may have already settled with Ms. Ellis and are complying with a gag order. If you want to tell your story anonymously please create a @gmail address and alias then post in the comment section or email me directly atauctions@aprilbrown.com.  Please read and share my posts with your organization so your volunteers and employees do not place this poem in any printed source or read it when a video camera is on.  There are hundreds of victims who made that innocent mistake.
I have discovered through communications with Linda Ellis that I am the first person that has ever refused to pay up. She has collected 100% of her claims simply by sending threatening letters by email. Unfortunately the victims are grieving friends and family, non-profit organizations and faith-based individuals—all people I respect and admire for their good works.
My hope is we can stop the sharing of this viral poem and protect others who had my clients’ same good intentions. In time, we can sweep clean the entire internet of these viral and income producing and unauthorized posts.
