Manny Regalado of A to Z Contracting Corp claimed he was a highly experience contractor from Los Angeles. He claimed he’s dealt with dozens of insurance claims in Los Angeles County. He claimed he was licensed and bonded in Los Angeles County. He said he had a degree in electrical engineering and has remodeled and flipped houses for 20 years. He’s 37 years old. The fact is he is only recently licensed and bonded in Washington.
I hired Manny Regalado on December 10, 2018 to repair a roof leak on a flat roof and contained to one corner. The leak was a slow leak and happened while I was out of town for 3 days. The storm was quite fierce and labeled a “Catastrophe” by Allstate. The fact is that nearly all of the damage to my home was caused because he removed my flat roof during the storm and failed to tarp the roof properly. I was able to file a claim with Allstate but the damage was and still is far beyond that claim.
Manny Regalado’s tore off my entire flat roof during a persistent storm. He should have tarped the flat roof and waited out the storm. He tore off the roof on a calm day but the next day the a storm returned and water poured in damaging 5 rooms of my house. The bulk of the damage was because he tore the roof off rather than waiting out the storm. He built tents out of plastic and 2 x 4’s over half my house and used sand bags to hold the plastic. These did not hold and the holes he made in the good part of my roof caused leaks in 6 locations. These leaks were difficult to trace and caused damage to other parts of my home. Because he tore off the roof, rain poured into my home for 3 weeks. I live alone and I had to manage pumps and empty heavy bins of water 24 hours a day alone. He left me to fend for myself. This was traumatic for someone of my age and slight build. I had to climb an extension ladder dozens of times a day to push off the water bellies in the tarps. I put a lawn chair on my roof to supervise the tarps at night during torrential rains. This was a very dangerous situation. I tried to mitigate the damage with little support fro this contractor. The tarps blew off nearly every day and Manny did return to put them back but they leaked continually. Each time he came back he added more 2 x 4’s and bought more tarps. He also tied them to my fence posts and the wind and rain buildup pulled over the posts. I had to replace 7 sections of fencing as well.
Because he tore off my entire roof, I had more than 50 plastic bins on the floor and on the outside of the ceiling catching rain. I had big garbage cans with pumps that had to be monitored by the minute. I washed and dried 8 loads of laundry every day until both appliances burned out. The heavy wet towels destroyed my new washer and the dryer finally failed. I then used the appliances of a neighbor and a laundry mat. Again, his tarping concept caused the damage and trauma.
All my cabinets were damaged or completely destroyed. All my appliances were damaged. Gas stove, microwave, dishwasher, hot water dispenser, refrigerator. I provided receipts that show my dishwasher and stove was repaired one week prior to the storm. All my appliances were in excellent condition.
I was forced to live in one room – the bedroom upstairs and because he drilled holes into that part of the roof, my bedroom had slow drips in 6 places. I had to have that roof recoated to stop the continual leaks on the new roof he installed. The roof on the new roof he installed continually leaked.
My kitchen was fully remodeled in 2008 via Home Depot and Rich Quackenbush Construction. I have all those receipts and photos as proof nothing was wrong with my kitchen until the storm and Manny’s remodel.. I had a Christmas Party the week before and those photos clearly show a beautiful cozy Martha Stewart style kitchen.
Because of the damp air, I could not use my furnace. All the ducting under the house had standing water inside. Because he changed the floor plan, all my ducting had to be replaced rather than cleaned. The furnace company said there is a chance my furnace will fail during the winter because some moisture likely entered the system.
When he tore off the roof, water filled all the can lights and light fixtures and he replaced all of the cans with high-end LED forever lights. He cut all the holes too big and all are out of alignment. He began installing new tongue and groove knowing the lights were out of alignment. All the tongue and groove ceiling around the lights has to be removed and recut. I contacted the lighting supplier and they had no solution for the holes being too large. He also replaced all the receptacles in a different color because he liked that color better. So now the rest of my house receptacles don’t match.
He nailed the tongue and groove on the surface instead of the valley and all the holes have to be filled. The ends of the boards have gaps. He trimmed out one set of cabinets in the laundry room and did a horrible job. He reframed the cabinets around the fireplace using mixed lumber. Nothing is square. He did not use clamps and because he used mixed lumber all had to be sanded, clamped, filled, some boards replaced and repainted.
He installed two pedestal sinks using molly bolts. Both came loose from the wall. When I pointed this out he said, “Molly bolts hold 250 lbs. and they should not have fallen from the wall”. He clearly had never installed a pedestal sink. The walls had to be opened up, a board installed and drywall repaired and re-installed. He scratched the chrome on the glass shower doors during installation.
The bathroom light fixtures were off level from each other by 1.5 inches. The wall had to be opened up, one fixture moved, drywall repaired and light reinstalled. He did not know how to install the claw foot tub. He did not use washers. Tub leaked and damaged my brand new hardwood floor and baseboard. He blamed me for not telling him he needed to put washers in the chrome supply lines. The water is shut off because the waterlines he installed leak under the bathroom.
He did not know how to install laundry room cabinets. He damaged the cabinets when he cut it down to fit and the trim does not fit in the space he left and the cabinets next to the one he cut down stick out from the other. Those cabinets are being thrown out and new cabinets have to be installed. His opening for the bathroom door was in the wrong place and hits the toilet when opened. The door had to removed and the toilet repositioned so the door would open.
He installed the exterior door wrong and it does not open all the way. He nailed finish nails into the beautiful trim by each hinge instead of under the rubber. There are 34 nail holes in the frame. The door has to be removed and re- positioned. All of his plumbing leaks. 2 electrical outlets do not work. There may be more but all the wiring is not connected. He did not install p-traps. The plumbing under my house leaks.
One very disturbing thing he did was created a design that meant he could tear out all of my perfect and beautiful beams and vintage car-decking in the ceiling. I argued repeatedly with him about removing these beams and finally I gave in because they no longer worked with his ridiculous design. His design included diagonal stairs. The stair height on one end is 8.5 inches and on the other 9.5 inches. I am a senior citizen and these steps are too high. When I complained about anything he mocked me and said my home was ugly and out of date. When I questioned him about his hours and expenditures he would say I didn’t remember or that I had agreed on things I had not.
He scratched my new gas stove. He pushed against my new refrigerator and the brads on his Whistle Wear pants made a divet in the front panel. I called him on it immediately and he blamed the drywall finisher who was never near the appliances.
The soffit for the new roof is not square. The new roof does not fit with the old roof and the soffit boards are uneven. He slapped up some boards to patch the old boards and it looks terrible. He used 12” rafter boards instead of 8 “ and the fascia board is 12” and looks ridiculous. He used 8” studs instead of 6 “ studs and this greatly increased my costs and I lost square footage.
He missed every deadline. First he was going to be done in February. Then in April. Then in June. Nearly every time he came back he damaged something. He claimed it was because “you keep changing things”. He’s talking about me begging him not to remove my tongue and groove and beams. Finally I gave in because his design looked wrong with them in place.
During the tear out he let the roof fall onto a newly remodeled stair well damaging the handrail and the steps. All the steps have to be sanded and coated, the bottom step replaced, hand rail replaced.
He did not know how to finish off the hallway where he tore out the roof and installed a support beam. He left this for me to figure out. The drywall guy figured out a fix and did me a favor and reframed the beam.
The trim around the windows in my office has to be replaced. The windows are uneven and the trim is amateurish.
He used his pliers directly on the new faucets and damaged every fixture. All have to be replaced.
He wore boots that caught rocks and scuffed my floors. I had to follow him around and constantly tell him to be careful. He laid on my hard wood floors with rivets digging into the new flooring. He muscled a cabinet into the bathroom and dropped it and gouged my floor.
He did everything out of order. The kitchen sink he installed leaks from the bottom. He cut the holes for the light switches too big and even an oversized cover plate does not hide it. There is water leaking under my house.
One day I heard him and the plumber Carlos Salazar arguing and Manny had cut through a water line Carlos had just installed. The plumber walked off the job. His ducting design was wrong and I heard the owner from Dynamic Utility Service tell him that I would be charged more for the changes he made. I’ve contacted all the vendors he brought to my house and all refuse to work with him again. As a side note, he led the vendors to believe he was dating me. I’m 30 years his senior.
On my final confrontation with the list of damages he responded by saying, “I never told you I knew how to do all this stuff”.
I can give you more details about his inappropriate comments and behavior and my awareness of how I was manipulated. He is overly friendly, pushy and demanding. He played romantic music on his speaker even after I told him I didn’t like it. After he lost his workers, I filled in ash is helper. The days I worked alongside him he made sexually suggestive comments. As an example if I pushed wire through a drill hole and said, “it’s through the hole”, he would say “that’s what she said” or make a groaning noise. I either said, “stop it” or ignored him. I tolerated this behavior because I just wanted to get the job done.
I believed he was licensed. He showed me his license and I believed he was operating legitimately. I believed he would make arrangements with the permit people. Although we did not have a written contract, I have many witnesses that he behaved as the contractor. Bought materials as a contractor and told people he was my contractor. Home Depot Manager will testify to this. He put my name and credit card on his Home Depot and Dunn Lumber accounts without my knowledge.
Manny Regalado bought tools with my money and kept the tools. He stole an extension ladder. He bought items for other jobs using my credit store cards. I have hundreds of receipts all representing trips he made to Home Depot from the job site. He left the job site every day multiple times for “diet sodas”.
He bought lunch for his crew using my credit card claiming this was his way of creating team work. I made it clear that my credit card was for supplies not food.
I read the reviews for his former business MR Design of Los Angeles on Yelp and Ripoff Report. I asked him about those reviews and he said that he had a partner named Ron Swing and it was Swing who committed the fraud and that these people were coming after him because Swing didn’t pay them back. He said he never took anyone’s money. I read his responses to the claims and they seemed reasonable. He claimed he was a celebrity contractor and performed on television remodeling shows. He also said he won awards on Porch.com and Houzz.com. I was able to confirm that he was a preferred contractor during this time with Home Depot. He is no longer recommended by H.D. And there are references to him on Porch and Houzz apparently gave him an award adding to his credibility.
One of his sub-contractors told me that He told him my house was the first house he’s ever remodeled. He told me he had done dozens of insurance jobs in Los Angeles County. It appears he has never been held accountable either in Los Angeles or Seattle.
